Training Guide — Horses of Hoofprint Bay
Training in Horses of Hoofprint Bay: Strength, Endurance, and Confidence explained, plus arena courses, lunging, trails, exercise limits, and when to hire trainers.
Training is the bridge between /guides/horse-care-guide/ chores and /competitions/show-jumping-guide/ prize money. Horses of Hoofprint Bay tracks Strength, Endurance, and Confidence on the horse sheet and again as colored bars during riding. This page is the wiki canonical explanation of how those numbers move, how the exercise meter limits spam, and where lunging fits—synthesized from developer posts by u/AliceTheGamedev (Thogli Studios) on r/GamesWithHorses, the TMQ Horse Game Database, and grindnstrat.

The three stats (and the fourth bar)
| Stat | Color (typical) | What it does in play |
|---|---|---|
| Confidence | Green | Trust during handling and riding; sub-full confidence triggers gait auto-changes and spooky stops on trails |
| Strength | Orange | Spent while cantering, galloping, and jumping; empty strength ends the ride |
| Endurance | Blue | Controls how quickly strength regenerates while riding slower than canter |
| Exercise | Pink | Daily stamina budget—training beyond the red warning exhausts the horse next day (TMQ wiki) |
Potential caps appear as greyed segments on strength and endurance bars. Developer commentary and wiki docs agree: you cannot train past that cap—breeding better horses (see /horses/breeding-guide/) is the fix, not repeating the same course forever.

Strength during riding
While riding (arena, trails, or town competitions), treat the orange bar like stamina in a sprint game:
- Canter, gallop, and jumps drain strength.
- Walk and trot recover strength (below canter speed).
- Endurance determines recovery speed—high endurance horses forgive aggressive pacing.
If strength empties, the session stops early—developer posts call this out explicitly for training exercises. Competition pages reuse the same rule (/competitions/medium-show-jumping-guide/).
TMQ adds warning icons: jumping with strength under the lowest marker tightens timing; advanced courses may require strength above the second marker for safe clearance. Watch for yellow strength warnings before takeoff.
Endurance vs strength training focus
Both stats climb from active work, but sources split where you grind:
| Activity type | Bias (community + dev) | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Riding arena courses | Strength | Cavaletti, Caprilli licenses, show jumping grids, cross-country schooling |
| Lunging lines | Both, early game | Walk-trot, transitions, random patterns—highlighted for yearlings and green horses |
| Trail rides | Endurance | Forest, beach, mountain routes unlocked via farm upgrades |
| Walking / confidence / free lunging | Exercise without stat focus | Bonding and cooldown days |
Developer posts note endurance takes longer to train than strength—plan multi-week trails instead of only repeating short arena drills.

Confidence: bonding and riding
Confidence rises from scritches on favorite spots, treats, successful jumps, praise after gait changes, and dedicated confidence courses. It falls when horses sit idle too long or rack up refusals, falls, and knocked rails.
Important limits from TMQ:
- Each gain method has a daily cap.
- Only training raises confidence past the second marker on the bar— treats alone plateau.
Low confidence horses show forward and backward arrow prompts during riding; counter-tap within the window (see /guides/controls-and-keybindings/). /horses/personality-traits/ like Rebellious, Energetic, and Chill add gait noise even at 100% confidence.
Exercise meter and overtraining
The pink exercise stat reflects how much work the horse already absorbed this round. TMQ states training past the red marker (warning icon on course buttons) makes the horse exhausted tomorrow—a hard stop on min-maxing every horse daily.
Use low-impact options on recovery days:
- Walking the horse manually
- Confidence training courses
- Free lunging (exercise without the main stat grind)
This mirrors real barn schedules: hard jump schools alternate with easy days.
Lunging: when and why
Developer posts emphasize lunging for:
- Horses too green for rider weight
- Yearlings not yet under saddle
- Building strength and endurance without arena jump pressure
TMQ lists multiple lunging course types gating on riding arena upgrades—walk-trot, canter transitions, random short/long patterns, and free lunging for exercise-only days. Upgrade the arena (/farm/building-upgrade-order/) to unlock richer lines just like show jumping licenses.
Arena courses and competition licenses
The riding arena is mandatory in round zero because all structured training lives there. Courses labeled competition license must be cleared before registering that horse for the matching discipline—Caprilli, show jumping, or cross country (/competitions/caprilli-guide/).
Pass rules (TMQ + grindnstrat):
- Finish within the time limit
- Stay under refusal/fall/knock limits
- Randomized obstacle orders appear in competitions, not necessarily in home license runs
Arena upgrades swap obstacle art and unlock higher licenses—Intermediate and Advanced horses need both stats and course access.
Staff trainers (reported automation)
After main-house upgrades (/farm/staff-guide/), horse trainers run arena sessions on assigned horses. TMQ tables claim trainers respect exercise limits (“doesn’t overtrain”) within their skill tier—reported caps, not verified numbers here.
Trainers save player minutes; they do not replace:
- Group hay/water/mucking
- Grooming before saddle sores stack
- Your competition runs in town
Hire trainers when manual sessions bottleneck income, not before the riding arena exists.
Training allocation ideas (analysis)
Early game (starter 30/25 reported stats):
- Confidence license courses if anything drops below competition requirements.
- Caprilli or cavaletti for cheap strength ticks and beginner wins.
- Short trails once unlocked for endurance without jump failures eating confidence.
Mid game:
- Split horses into jumpers (arena-heavy) and trail/endurance pairs for cross-country prep.
- Stop daily training when exercise icons flash red—spread work across the herd.
Late game:
- Breed toward higher grey caps before chasing Advanced licenses.
- Use lunging to warm up yearlings while competition horses rest.
Links to competitions and money
Training is not an island. Prize money funds arena upgrades; upgrades unlock harder licenses. If training feels slow, check whether you are care-bottlenecked (fix care first) or cap-bottlenecked (fix breeding).
